Drawings by Kananginak Pootoogook

The 2010 Winter Olympics was one of the proudest moments in Canadian history. People were united regardless of age, race, or ethnicity, to stand together in celebration of our remarkable athletes. If there’s one thing we can learn, Canada is a vast nation, rich with cultural diversity.

Having said that, here in Gastown we are blessed with unique galleries that showcase many artistic pieces; be it contemporary or native arts. Marion Scott Gallery is having an exhibition of drawings by Kananginak Pootoogook, a prominent figure in the native arts, from February 13 until April 4,2010

Checkout the details below!

Over the course of an artistic career that now spans five decades, Cape Dorset’s Kananginak Pootoogook has produced a unique—and uniquely important—body of graphic work. Perhaps best known for his meticulous drawings and prints of birds and other northern wildlife, Pootoogook has evolved a distinctive style that combines elements of realism with a vision that is more interpretative than literal. In addition to his celebrated wildlife imagery, the one-time hunter has also sought to create a detailed visual record of recent historical and social change, documenting the collision between tradition and modernity in the North.

Kananginak Pootoogook: Drawings

This winter, the Marion Scott Gallery proudly presents Kananginak Pootoogook: Drawings, the artist’s first solo exhibition in more than 5 years. Comprising 24 new and recent works on paper, it brings into the focus some of the major themes and formal concerns that have come to define Pootoogook’s expression. The exhibition features numerous examples of his signature wildlife work, including depictions of owls, caribou and polar bears. Augmenting these are several images that describe the introduction of modern technology and its impact on northern culture.
Kananginak Pootoogook: Drawings also includes two recently completed mural-like drawings, the first large-scale works on paper that the artist has ever made.

One comment for “Drawings by Kananginak Pootoogook”

  1. I was also there at the “Kananginak Pootoogook: Drawings” opening reception, which was very well attended despite all the other events taking place around town. Mr. Pootoogook prepared a song for the guests – which he sang in Inuktitut (Inuit mother tongue). It was quite touching. There are two large-scale drawings in the exhibit(one featured here), which are even better when seen in person.

Apparently, Pootoogook is a recipient for a National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Visual Art this year. He’s a bit of a living legend!
